Floating Granite Ball Monument
The so-called “Floating Granite Ball” is an interactive kinetic ball fountain, sometimes referred to as a “Kugel ball.” Kugel is the German word for ball. A kugel ball is a water feature or sculpture where a sphere sitting in a spherical pocket on a pedestal is supported by a thin film of water. Pressurized water flows between the sphere and pocket, creating a mechanical fluid bearing that is nearly frictionless. The granite ball measures four feet in diameter and weighs 5,000 lbs., but a hand nudge will change its rotating direction.
